Some of the notables in the package is the addition of neuroscience to the remedial massage world.

What does this mean for people with the older package HLT52015 or HLT50307?
If it wasn’t in your package, it wasn’t. Just because it’s been added doesn’t mean we remedial therapists automatically get to start sprouting neuroscience unless you have an additional qualification like myotherapy that already had it included.
But it is now within the scope of our qualification. So post diploma studies on neuroscience can be included in your professional development training.
What’s good about this?
Discussing and treating pain neuroscience greatly broadens the scope of discussion, assessment, and treatment for remedial therapists.
It almost levels the playing field in relation to professions like physio, exercise physiology, myo, chiro, and osteo.
As neuroscience changes and develops so will remedial therapy. Which may help to break down the societal perceptions around massage.

On another note the diploma became more specific regarding the practical hours required during training. With specific practical time requirements for relaxation techniques and remedial techniques.
What does this mean?
College’s will have greater obligations in structuring clinical hours and observations.
What’s good about this?
It will make it more difficult for colleges let let students slip through a diploma only ever doing effleurage. At the completion of the relaxation log the student will be beholden to performing the remedial techniques for the remainder of the logbook.

There are two new competencies in the diploma, and another six have been superseded. Two electives have also been superseded. Moral of the story, don’t let your association membership slip. If you drop out of currency there will be a significant portion of the diploma you won’t be able to RPL.
